I just completed a new tutorial over at Adafruit.com — make your own Galaxy Pendant.
I wanted an LED necklace I could wear swimming or hot tubbing. Really, it was Mermaid Glimmer who insisted on it.. she’s getting a lot of use this summer and wanted a little dressing-up. 🙂
It’s easy to waterproof something by sealing it completely in resin. But you run into a couple challenges when something’s fully sealed. First, how do you turn it on and off? And second, how do you charge the battery?
I solved both of these problems using Science. Â This necklace has an induction coil for wireless charging and it has a tilt-switch inside.. so the necklace turns on when it’s upright and off when it’s laying flat. Â It also rotates inside the setting so it can be worn while turned off or turned on.
It’s got a 3d printed setting and a 3d printed base.  It lasts all night on a charge and uses mosaic glass to diffuse the light.  I’ve made 3 of them so far in different colors and I’ll probably do another in rainbow.  🙂
