I’ve got a new Adafruit Learning Center guide up: how to make your own LED, persistence-of-vision double staffs. I’m calling them Morning Star Double Staffs.
They’re pretty great. They’re based on the Genesis Poi tutorial code, but I’ve added an infrared sensor, so I can change brightness, patterns and speed with a remote control. They’ve got a pretty hefty battery too, so they shine really bright and “burn” for a long time. Just like with the poi, I can upload pictures or geometric images to them — but these hold images that are 36 pixels high instead of just 16, so they come across pretty different than the poi. Also, since doublestaffs spin more slowly than poi, they seem to work better with differently shaped images.
I’m still playing with uploading different pictures, logos, and ideas, and learning what these things are capable of and what makes them really shine.
My LED light show arsenal is growing! (and glowing) With these double staffs, our Genesis Poi and phoenix hula hoops, along with our animated LED Isis Wings and glowing costumes, I can dance all night long. (Find out more about booking our LED dancers here)
A few more photos.. enjoy!
