I used to have a raised tatami Japanese-style table in my dining room. We loved it for a while, but then noticed that over the past year or so we never, EVER sit there. That means it was definitely time for some redecoration.
We tore out the raised platform and put the tatami mats directly on the subfloor. There was about a 3-4″ gap around the edges, and so I filled them with colored glass pebbles with a strip of APA102 “Dotstar” LEDs submerged under the glass.
It looks really lovely. I think my favorite part is the way the glass refracts the light from the LEDs and creates a beautiful color-shifting pattern on the walls in the room. I feel like I’m floating on an island of light. 🙂
